T-levels are a brand new qualification and are designed to be equivalent to 3 'A'-Levels.
Final year students are looking for placements of:
- ~45 Days/year
- 80% Classroom. 20% Work
The University recognises T-levels (and apprenticeships) as a pipeline for recruitment and although not exclusive to technical roles, they are well-suited.
The first intake of students was only possible in the 2023/24 academic year and we had 4 students in laboratory roles. The 2024/25 cohort is being finalised and placements began in July 2024.
Information for prospective hosts
We encourage T-level placements across the University and welcome contact from prospective hosts. They can be a great way to expand your talent pipeline, especially when looking at recruiting for entry level roles. Most information is covered in the packs that come with students from host Institutions but we are working on local guidance as well including:
Insurance
Previous cohorts have been covered by the University of Cambridge liability policy but check the current terms.
Access
Access requirements may vary by locality and individual Departments have found ways of working to enable students to access technology as necessary through supervision. The University is currently looking at policy in this area.
Safeguarding
Safeguarding measures and guidance are provided in the student pack and in addition, it is important to complete form HR33 for all placements. Where the students are under 18 it is also crucial.
Resources
For more information on T-levels, contact us or explore the government website. The UK ITSS have also released a toolkit to help get you started. It has excellent resources and case studies.
Our local provider so far has been the Cambridge Academy of Science and Technology, but we are seeing more strands and providers appearing. You can check the T-level finder (gov.uk) to match courses with your area.
