Who gets credit? Fair attribution and publishing workshops for technicians
The Biological Sciences Libraries team have now delivered a workshop on fair attribution and publishing to over 100 technicians at locations across the University, from the Biomedical Campus to West Cambridge.
The session is designed to explore the issue of authorship and acknowledgement for technicians, whose work is vital for making research happen and generating new knowledge, but whose contributions are not consistently recognised in journal articles and other outputs.
The University is developing a set of Fair Attribution Guidelines, similar to those in place at other institutions like the University of Liverpool.
In the meantime, this workshop gives an introduction to the publishing process, as well as tools such as ORCID and the CRediT taxonomy, encouraging technical staff to recognise where their contributions to research deserve acknowledgement or co-authorship credit. The workshop also offers opportunities to meet colleagues from other areas of the University, share and compare experiences, and think about how the culture of attribution could be made fairer.
