Technician Professional Development Series: Grant Applications A University of Cambridge, University of Oxford and UCL collaboration

This session will explore how technicians can engage with, contribute to and lead grant applications.
Programme overview:
- Welcome and context – reflections on why grant writing matters for technicians and opportunities through UKRI and other funders.
- Talks from invited speakers:
- Dr Alex Laude (Newcastle) – career journey, funding landscape for technicians and lessons from successful bids.
- Dr Simon Carpenter (Cambridge) – grant writing in career development, fellowships and technology funding opportunities.
- Professor Christopher Thrasivoulou (UCL) – case study of grant success, UKRI Technician Commitment Action Plan and reflections on recognition.
- Case study highlights – short examples from technicians (Warwick, Glasgow School of Art, Oxford/UCL) showing different ways technical staff have been involved in bids and the impact this has had.
- Panel discussion and Q&A – interactive session with all speakers and case study contributors. Topics include building confidence, navigating application processes and recognition of technical expertise.
- Closing reflections – key takeaways and a look ahead to the next session in the series at UCL in November.
This is part of a series of three events hosted by University of Oxford, University of Cambridge, and University College London in 2025. They are designed to support the collaboration and professional development of technical staff based in large networks at universities across the UK. The programme is in partnership with the ITSS through their collaboration fund.
These events will offer you the opportunity to learn more about outreach and community engagement skills; getting involved in grant applications; and further career development opportunities. They will also provide you with the chance to meet and discuss these topics with technical staff from other large universities.
